Debated United States-funded Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Concludes Relief Activities

Humanitarian work in the region
The GHF had halted its food distribution centers in Gaza subsequent to the truce was implemented six weeks ago

The controversial, American and Israeli-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) says it is winding down its humanitarian work in the Palestinian territory, subsequent to approximately 180 days.

The foundation had already suspended its multiple aid distribution centers in Gaza following the halt in hostilities between Palestinian factions and Israel took effect in recent weeks.

The GHF aimed to bypass the UN as the primary provider of humanitarian assistance to Gazans.

UN and other aid agencies would not collaborate with its system, claiming it was questionable and hazardous.

Hundreds of Palestinians were killed while seeking food amid turbulent circumstances near GHF's sites, mainly through Israeli military action, as reported by United Nations.

Israeli authorities stated its soldiers fired warning shots.

Program Termination

The GHF said on Monday that it was winding down operations now because of the "effective conclusion of its humanitarian effort", with a aggregate of 3 million parcels containing the equivalent of more than 187 million meals distributed to Gazans.

The foundation's chief officer, the executive director, also said the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) - which has been established to help execute US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan - would be "taking over and developing the model GHF piloted".

"The organization's system, in which Hamas could no longer loot and profit from stealing aid, had major impact in getting Hamas to the table and securing a halt in hostilities."

Comments and Positions

The Palestinian faction - which refutes aid diversion claims - supported the shutdown of the aid organization, according to reports.

A spokesman for said GHF should be made responsible for the damage it inflicted to Palestinians.

"We call upon all global human rights groups to make certain that consequences are faced after resulting in fatalities and harm of numerous Palestinians and covering up the food deprivation strategy implemented by the Israeli authorities."

Operational Background

The GHF began operations in Gaza on late May, a short period subsequent to Israeli authorities had somewhat relaxed a complete restriction on aid and commercial deliveries to Gaza that continued for 77 days and caused severe shortages of necessary provisions.

Three months later, a famine was declared in the Gaza metropolitan area.

The organization's sustenance provision locations in various parts of the Palestinian territory were administered by United States-based protection companies and positioned in Israeli military zones.

Aid Organization Objections

The UN and its partners said the approach breached the core assistance standards of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that directing needy individuals into militarised zones was fundamentally dangerous.

United Nations human rights division said it recorded the killing of at least 859 Palestinians attempting to obtain nourishment in the vicinity of GHF sites between spring and summer months.

A further 514 persons were fatally wounded around the routes of UN and other aid convoys, it added.

The majority of these individuals were killed by the Israeli military, based on the agency's reports.

Divergent Narratives

Israeli defense forces said its troops had fired warning shots at individuals who came near them in a "menacing" manner.

The organization declared there were no shooting events at the relief locations and accused the UN of using "untrue and confusing" figures from the Gazan medical department controlled by militant factions.

Future Implications

The GHF's future had been indefinite since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a halt in hostilities arrangement to execute the first phase of Trump's peace plan.

The agreement stated relief provision would take place "free from intervention from the two parties through the UN organizations and their partners, and the humanitarian medical organization, in conjunction with other worldwide bodies not linked whatsoever" with militant groups and the Israeli government.

United Nations representative the international body's communicator said on Monday that the foundation's closure would have "no influence" on its work "as we never partnered with them".

The official further mentioned that while increased relief was entering the region since the truce was implemented on early October, it was "insufficient to address all necessities" of the 2.1 million residents.
